Who we are

The Thomas Jenning's Open Learning Village (TJOLV) is led by Dr. Rick Patterson. He is the founder and principal owner of TJOLV.  


Rick has developed and facilitates numerous online courses including the Online Teaching and Learning Certificate, Nonprofit Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Certificate, Internet Privacy, Fiscal Fitness: Understanding the Basics of Everyday Finances Course, the Postsecondary School Administrator Certificate, and the Soft Skills for the 21st Century course (among others).  


He has served in numerous positions in higher education: Assistant VP of Distance Learning at Old Dominion University; Director of Private and Out of State Postsecondary Education with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV); Director of Quality Assurance at the Accrediting Council of Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS); Director of Military Strategy with National Louis University; and others.  


Dr. Patterson earned a graduate certificate in e-Learning and Online Teaching from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and his Doctor of Education (Adult and Continuing Education) credential from National Louis University (Chicago).  He is the author of the book, Now I Can Dream: Adult Black Males and the Mentors That Saved Them, a narrative study of adult males in informal mentor-protégé relationships. Dr. Patterson is a graduate of the Harvard Management Development program.
