Module 2 - Maintaining Aseptic Conditions


Students will learn how to recognize and report signs and symptoms of infection quickly, and identify behaviors that prevent the spread of infection. Topics Included Cover:

  • Implementing Standard Precautions
  • Cleaning and Disinfecting Storage Area, Cart, etc.
  • Disposing of Infectious Waste According to Virginia State Law




Module 3 - Facilitating Resident's Self Administration or Assisting with Medical Administration


Students will learn the processes that must be mastered to effectively manage a viable medication administration program. Topics Included Cover:

  • Reviewing Admission Records and Doctor's Orders
  • Maintaining Residents' Medical According to Designated Policy
  • Preparing MAR and Other Medication Forms
  • Facilitating Residents' Awareness of Medication Purposes and Effects
  • Assisting Residents in Interpreting Prescription Labels
  • Demonstrating the Five Rights of Medication Administration
  • Following Proper Procedure for Pouring/Preparing Medications
  • Measuring and Recording Vital Signs and Assisting Residents in Decision Making
  • Assisting Residents in Administering Oral Medications and Documenting Medication Administration
  • Report and Document a Resident's Refusal to Take Medication
  • Documenting Medication Errors
  • Storing and Securing All Medication
  • Maintaining an Inventory of Medication
  • Disposing of Medications




Module 4 - Assisting Residents with Self-Administration of Prepared Instillations and Treatments


Students will learn about administering medications by various routes, including inhalation therapy and the administration of epinephrine in emergency situations. Topics Included Cover:

  • Assisting the Resident in Administering the Following:
    • Eye drops and Ointments
    • Ear Drops
    • Nasal Drops and Sprays
    • Topical Preparations
    • Compresses and Dressings
    • Vaginal and Rectal Products
    • Soaks and Sitz Baths
    • Inhalation Products
    • Oral Hygiene Products
    • Transdermal Patches
    • Medications by way of Nebulizer
    • Administration of Epi-pen® Injection




Module 5 - Assisting Diabetic Residents - Preparing an Insulin Injection


Students will learn about the different types of diabetes, the complications related to diabetes, and the types of insulin. Instruction is also provided on how to perform finger-sticking for glucose monitoring and how to administer insulin by injection. Topics Included Cover:

  • Understanding the Basic Facts about Diabetes
  • Activities Involved in the Management of Diabetes
  • Signs and Symptoms of Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia
  • Monitoring Blood-Glucose
  • Administering Insulin Injections




Module 1 - Preparing to Function Effectively as a Medication Aide


Students will review topics included in the pre-requisite training. Information on International Time and the Five Rights of Medication Administration may be new material for students. Topics Included Cover:

  • Understanding the Implications of Resident's Rights
  • Recognizing Emergencies and Other Conditions
  • Identifying Medical Terminology and Abbreviations
  • Identifying Classes of Medication
  • Assisting with the Administration of Psychotropic Medications




Orientation Module


A customizable overview module that introduces the class to the course. This module includes and details the following:

  • Class Syllabus

This course currently is offered in Virginia only.

This course is designed to be an online hybrid course. Meaning that in the states of Virginia, the online curriculum alone cannot be a full replacement for a practical course component. Training centers and schools will need a practical component in addition to this digital curriculum offering.

Readings and activities for the course are in different formats such as online articles, PDF's, videos as well as readings. All of which is embedded in this course. A textbook is not required for this course.
